Cast list:

Nick Carraway – Male, playing age around 30 – American accent.

The narrator and almost-omniscient observer of the piece; the story we are given is seen through his eyes and told in his words. A reflective optimist, Nick has arrived in New York City at the beginning of summer 1922 to start his new job as a Wall Street bondsman. He moves in next door to the elusive Jay Gatsby, just across the bay from his cousin Daisy and her husband Tom. Over the course of the summer, he is thrown into the vibrant turmoil of their wealthy, entangled lives.

Nick is “both within and without” – whilst he is very much part of the story, he is also a keen observer, quietly learning before relaying the story to the audience. He has a certain awkwardness and shyness about him, but needs to be confident enough as an actor to carry the piece and deliver several crucial (and wordy!) monologues.

Jay Gatsby – Male, playing age around 35 – American accent required, a soft Boston accent would be great if possible.

Our mysterious and enigmatic titular character, Jay Gatsby is the epitome of hope. Having lifted himself from poverty to incredible wealth, he has spent five years holding on to dream of reuniting with the love of his life, Daisy. Unbeknownst to her, Gatsby has bought the biggest house in West Egg, directly across the bay from Daisy and Tom’s mansion, and holds lavish parties each weekend in the hopes of drawing her attention.

He has a quiet gravitas, but is still incredibly likeable – the audience need to care about him, whilst also being in awe of him.

Daisy Buchanan  – Female, playing age around 25 – American accent.

A beautiful socialite from Louisville, Kentucky.  Nick’s cousin, she has been married to Tom Buchanan for three years, whilst remaining the object of Gatsby’s affections. Immensely wealthy but painfully unhappy, Daisy is a fine balance of a character; whilst she is charming and vulnerable, she is also careless and shallow. She is capable of affection, but not loyalty.

Tom Buchanan  – Male, playing age around 30 – American accent.

Husband to Daisy and old college friend of Nick. A well-educated man from an aristocratic family, he promises Daisy a wealthy lifestyle that was enough for her to break her loyalty to Gatsby. Imposing both in body and in character, Tom has an air of danger and aggression, and is brutish and single-minded in his views. A nationally-known footballer in his youth, Tom’s life has been an anti-climax since then, a disappointment that had left him controlling, violent and unfulfilled.

Jordan Baker – Female, playing age around 22-25 – American accent.

Aloof and alluring, Jordan is Daisy’s best friend and the potential love interest of Nick. Having grown up in awe of Daisy, she has blossomed into a self-assured, successful sportswoman; however, her career has been built on deception and she is incurably dishonest in everything she does. Her character is a fine balance between mystery and dishonesty; the audience need to admire her, but never fully trust her.

George Wilson – Male, playing age around 35-45 – Ideally requires a New York accent, though not as strong as Myrtle’s.

Husband to Myrtle, George is a poverty-stricken mechanic in the Valley of the Ashes. A “spiritless man”, George has been downtrodden by years of near-destitution and the fading love of his wife. Despite twelve years of marriage, George and Myrtle are strikingly different; he is shy and unassuming, while she is vivacious and outgoing. While he will end the story a murderer, he will also end it dead himself after mourning his beloved wife; an intensely tragic figure, the audience need to feel incredibly sorry for him despite his actions.

Myrtle Wilson – Female, playing age around 30-40  – American accent required, a strong New York accent would be ideal.

Wife to George and mistress to Tom, Myrtle desperately seeks a better life than the one she has. She feels trapped in her marriage and her poverty, and sees Tom as an escape; whilst she appreciates how her wealthy lover can spoil her, she also believes he genuinely cares for her. On the surface she is overtly sexy and brash, but underneath is one of the most tragic characters of the story; she is a victim of both her circumstances and of the people around her.

Meyer Wolfsheim (and others) – Playing age: Around 40+ American accent.

A professional gambler and business associate of Gatsby’s. A high-ranking member of the prohibition underworld, he’s the mysterious gangster type, eccentric but quietly menacing.

Whoever is playing this role will also be in several other scenes with a few lines as a butler, policeman, barman, etc.

May 16th to May 18th 2024.
The Rise and Fall of Little Voice
Laura Hogg is an only child, living with her mother in Scarborough. Fleeing reality, she spends her time in her bedroom listening to records and impersonating the voices of famous American and British stars, from Marilyn Monroe and Judy Garland to Gracie Fields and Shirley Bassey. Her overheard brilliance persuades various characters to try to exploit her……and the poignant drama unfolds.

Phone man – small cameo role – any age.

Billy – phone engineer and also in love with LV, they develop a very strong bond. Age – mid 20’s approx

Sadie – friend of Mari Hoff’s – a great character part, and defiantly not the sharpest tool in the box. Age same age as Mari (approx 50)
